Elckerlyc International School is one of eight Dutch primary schools with an International Section. These are regular Dutch State schools; some are public which under Dutch law means they have no Schoolboard but the municipal council of the city/village in which the school is located acts as the local authority; others may be based on religion (Roman Catholic, Protestant, etc.) or based on an educational philosophy (Dalton, Montessori) . Most of the schools based on a particular educational philosophy are usually non-denominational.

DUTCH INTERNATIONAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS
Elckerlyc is a member of The National Working Group for Internationally Oriented Primary Education in the Netherlands (LWG/IGBO); now usually called DIPS – the Dutch International Primary Schools. This group of all Dutch Primary schools with an international section discusses matters related to school fees, curriculum, professional development, etc. International Streams are bound to the Dutch Primary Education Law (WPO) and therefore to the teaching of subjects as set out in Article 9, sub-sections 1, 2 & 3, with the possibility of exemption.

In practical terms this means that teaching in the International Sections is in the English language. The guideline for such schools is that some time should be covered by activities in the Dutch language. In order to achieve this and, as a reflection of our commitment to maintaining Elckerlyc as a whole school, we try and integrate as much as possible without jeopardising the curriculum objectives of each section. Formal Dutch lessons each week, Gymnastics and Music are delivered in Dutch and integration sessions whereby groups of children from the International School join with groups from the Dutch School for sports or go on trips and camp together.

It will be noted then, that although our Dutch School follows the Montessori philosophy, the International School does not. Nevertheless, both streams are aware of the aims and ideals of the other and, where it seems appropriate, the I.S. happily incorporates some of the Montessori ideals and materials.

The International School is divided into eight groups (classes):

Group 0 3 - 4 year olds
Group 1 4 - 5 year olds
Group 2 5 - 6 year olds
Group 3 6 - 7 year olds
Group 4 7 - 8 year olds
Group 5 8 - 9 year olds
Group 6 9 - 10 year olds
Group 7 10 - 11 year olds
