Policy for arrival and departure from school

• The doors at Klimopzoom are opened at 8:15. Children and parents/carers are then welcome to enter the building by using the entrance point agreed with the child’s teacher.
• Children should not be left at school earlier than 8:15.
• We begin the school day formally at 8:30 so parents/carers need to leave the building before this time.
• Where parents/carers are unexpectedly late or the child will be absent parents/carers should contact the school office so that the class teacher can be informed.

Children depart from school using a variety of methods. Parents/carers should inform the teacher in writing of the collection and travel arrangements for the child(ren).

• Taxi collection – the taxi driver must enter the building and identify themselves and who they need to collect to a member of staff. Children awaiting taxi collection should be brought to the aula. Please inform the member of staff with bus duty of any changes to the normal schedule.
• Children using the ESTEC bus will wait in the aula and be escorted by a member of staff to the bus. Please inform the member of staff with bus duty of any changes to the normal schedule.
• Teachers will personally hand children (Groups 0 – 4) to parents/carers at the end of the school day, or to an authorised adult who has been placed in charge of the child (this should not be an older sibling). Children should be collected from school within 5 minutes of closing time or where they are able to travel home independently leave the premises immediately.
• Children remaining in the playground after school closure should not be left unattended but be supervised at all times by a responsible adult.
• Where parents/carers are unexpectedly late they should contact the school office so that the class teacher can be informed. Children should wait in the aula or class until collected.
• Where parents/carers are repeatedly late an appointment will be made with the Director to discuss alternative possibilities.
• Where children are allowed to leave school alone at the end of each day (gps 5-7) a letter of notification should be sent to the class teacher and should be renewed regularly where there are changes.
• Any child who has to leave school for an appointment during school hours must be collected by a parent/carer who should report to the administration office.

Policy for Lunchtime Supervision

Introduction
Lunchtime Supervisory Assistants have a very important part to play in ensuring that children are happy and settled. Children will learn how to build good and caring friendships if they are encouraged to enjoy themselves in a kind and sociable way with other children. Lunchtime Supervisors who show fairness and kindness, who listen carefully and encourage children to play well together help children to become more respectful and responsible towards each other.
This policy is designed to clarify the following in order that lunchtimes are happy, well ordered and beneficial to all:-
a. The role of the lunchtime supervisor.
b. Expected patterns of good behaviour.
c. Achieving good behaviour
d. Unacceptable behaviour.
e. Dealing with unacceptable behaviour.
f. Wet playtime procedures.
g. Guidance for lunch
h. In the playground

The Role of the Lunchtime Supervisor
Lunchtime supervisors are expected to:-
• Encourage good behaviour of pupils whilst eating their dinner and in the playground
• Encourage children to queue in an orderly manner
• Promote the safety and well being of each child
• Deal with accidents where appropriate
• Ensure children are in the correct place at the correct time
• Prevent children from taking food out of the dining areas
• To inform the Coordinator of serious incidents and unacceptable behaviour
• Approach any ‘strange’ adults who may appear on the playground and report to the Coordinator
• Work towards dinner times being enjoyable for all

Expected Patterns of Good Behaviour
Our children are expected to:-
• Show care, kindness and consideration to others
• Respect other people’s property and views
• Play games in an ordered manner
• Show good manners in action and word

On the playground children should:
• Play constructively until time for the start of the lessons
• Line up quietly when asked to do so
• Only use correct toilets
• Play appropriate games in correct section of playground

Inside school children should:-
• Walk quietly to designated lunchtime area
• Be polite when collecting lunchboxes etc
• Walk quietly out of the designated lunchtime area
• Not play in cloakrooms, classrooms or library area

Achieving Good Behaviour
The following strategies have been agreed as being helpful:
• PRAISE children for things they do well
• Draw attention to unacceptable behaviour not the child
• Always be fair and consistent
• Be consistent with sanctions
• Try not to shout or be bossy
• Never argue, discuss the situation quietly
• Encourage and play games with children
Unacceptable Behaviour
• Pushing, pulling or fighting
• Swearing
• Interrupting conversations
• Shouting
• Running in school
• Answering back
• Failing to respond to the supervisor
• Questioning supervisor’s authority

Dealing with Unacceptable Behaviour
Take pupils to one side and remind them of the rules.
If poor behaviour persists record in notebook (Reception desk) and make child aware that this has happened.
The parents of persistently poorly behaved children will be invited to school to discuss the situation with the Area Coordinator who may apply the following sanctions.
• If the problem continues parents will be warned of a possible exclusion at lunchtime
• Pupil to be given opportunity for returning at lunchtimes as long as acceptable behaviour is maintained.

Wet Lunchtime Procedures
Children to go to their own areas
• Coordinator to be available at all times (where the coordinator is not in school refer to the class teacher)
• Class areas to have adequate wet playtime materials
Guidance for Lunch
The children all need a healthy and balanced meal at lunchtime, to sustain them throughout the afternoon. Lunchtime food should be seen as a meal and not be viewed as a picnic or a snack.
Children are therefore encouraged, as far as individual tastes and preferences allow, to bring items such as sandwiches, a yoghurt, a piece of fruit and a non-fizzy drink. Supplements such as crisps and sweet items can be added as top-ups to ensure that each child eats a sufficient amount to feel full up.
• Children are encouraged to eat the healthy items first and eat the sweet things at the end of the meal. Children are also expected to eat savoury foods before sweet ones.
• Children will be expected to eat the majority of the food that is provided and parents can help in this matter by sending food which their child enjoys and by sending the amount that they would like or expect their child to consume.
• Children are encouraged to drink a sufficient amount of fluid. Water dispensers are situated in each classroom and children are advised to drink water regularly during the course of the day, to prevent dehydration. This is particularly important after playtimes and sporting activities and in the warmer weather.
• Any food that is uneaten must be sent home in the child’s lunchbox. This enables parents to see exactly what their child has and has not eaten each day and also prevents stale food from being stored in the litter bins in school.
• The school is aware that there are always certain children who have allergies to different foods. For this reason it is essential that children do not swap their food with other children, or give any items of their lunch to others.
General points:
• Please try to arrive on time into the classroom. If you like to come early, please do so, help yourself to tea or coffee from the kitchen.
• At the designated time the children will collect their lunches in an orderly fashion.
• Children wipe, dry and put away placements or tables. The teachers will have appointed lunch monitors where necessary.
• When the students are ready to go outside to play they line up in the corridor and WALK outside behind the Lunch time assistant.
• Children are encouraged to help clean up the playground at the end of the break.
• At the end of the break the children line up when the signal in given. Each group is permitted to enter the building quietly after they have formed a straight and neat line.
• Those children that finish early must read quietly until the class is ready to go out.
• When children have changed into outdoor shoes they return to their classroom and wait to go outside with the lunch supervisor. This is quiet and orderly.
• In case of an accident there is a first aid box at school suitable for minor accidents. There is also a book to note injuries, especially bumps. If you are concerned please let the teacher know so that we can monitor the child in the afternoon or call the parents. We keep the contact numbers in the office. The nearest hospital is the Rijnland Ziekenhuis. Where it is inappropriate for the lunch supervisor to attend to an injury the class teacher, coordinator or designated first aid person should be called.
In the playground
• There must be at least one supervisor in the playground at all times.
• Students are to remain outside and are not permitted to return unsupervised inside the building.
• A limit of two pupils may go at a time to the toilets, afterwards they are to return to the playground immediately.
• Please encourage children to keep the playground neat and tidy.
• Please check that all outside toys are recovered and placed back into the toy box.
• Rainy lunch times are often difficult as the children cannot go outside. In this case it is useful to give a child a choice of sit down activities to do. Reading books, comics and drawing will all help to pass the time. With the Area Co-ordinator’s permission some children may be allowed to use the computer room. Please make sure they tidy up after themselves. We want children to be independent, tidy and to respect the school’s resources.
• No child is allowed to stay in during lunch unless the teacher has given instructions to the lunch supervisor.
