Numeracy at Elckerlyc International School
Children are taught Numeracy through the National N
umeracy Strategy for England & Wales.
To ensure each child is able to work to their potential and has a good grasp of the foundation concepts, the numeracy curriculum is very practical in its nature. Children work in small groups some receiving structured support to strengthen their foundation, whilst others move on to extension work to apply learned concepts.
Within the Numeracy Strategy, a set of goals are given which children should have reached by the end of each school year.
Throughout the school year, assessments are carried out by class teachers, to establish to which degree these goals have been met.
To assist teachers in achieving these goals the Collins Primary Mathematics scheme is used as primary guideline by all groups.

Literacy at Elckerlyc International School
Children are taught Literacy through the National Literacy Strategy for England & Wales. A phonic based programme is used to teach reading and spelling skills.
We aim to create a stimulating environment through which the children come to feel that speaking, listening, reading & writing are an essential and natural means of communication.
We promote a learning environment providing a wide access to literature through class teaching and library resources.

Dutch at Elckerlyc International School
The teaching of our host country language is an important part of Elckerlyc International School.
Organisation
As soon as students have a reasonable command of the English language they will enter the Dutch program. This will vary individually as some students will acquire a language at a faster pace than others. The school will make these decisions after close consultation with class teachers, EAL-teachers (English as an Additional Language) and the Dutch teachers. Children in groups 0 and 1 will receive 2 sessions of 30 minutes per week, students in groups 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 will receive 2 sessions of 45 minutes per week.
Objectives
• to be able to communicate and take part in Dutch society
• to communicate with students within the Dutch Montessori part of the school
• to expose students to various aspects of Dutch culture
International Primary Curriculum at Elckerlyc International School
The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) is a comprehensive, integrated and inquiry based curriculum. Used
by Elckerlyc International School since September 2002, the IPC is now approved by the Dutch Ministry of Education as well as being established in over 530 schools from over 50 countries from around the world.
The learning goals of the curriculum are split into four age bands covering the primary years: Early Years (3-5 years old), Milepost 1 (5-7 years), Milepost 2 (7-9 years old) and Milepost 3 (9-12 years old). Within each age band there are three strands of Learning Goals: Subject goals, Personal Goals and International Goals. Subjects covered in most units include history, geography, science, art, design, IT, PE, music and society. Through most units of work, links are made to the host and home countries.
Each Group from 2-7 has during the course of the year, several units of study that may last anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks. In each unit of study, the teachers cover the learning goals as outlined by IPC as well as make plans for the individual needs of the students in the class.
Your child’s teachers will inform you of the units of study and its contents.
Parental involvement is an important part of the overall implementation of the IPC topics and you child’s teacher will contact you on a regular basis as to the needs for volunteers.

• Gymnastics

Music at Elckerlyc International School
One of the most important
goals we try to achieve at Elckerlyc when it concerns musical education is to motivate the children to participate actively in every lesson.
We make sure that there is a lot of tempo and activity in every lesson, introduced through a broad range of music.
The main "educational domains" of music are:
making music, writing music, reading music, to speak about music and to listen to music.
These are domains that have been formulated by the Dutch government and that cover the subject of music within a primary school very well. It is our intention to have a performance every year so the children can demonstrate their skills and talents.
